Additionally, from JFK-EZE (with a stop-over in Brazil) you can get TAM and Varig starting at 600 USD. Probably worth an inexpensive SAN-JFK-SAN and then your intl ticket. Or... the above suggestion.

Note that Varig miles accrue for Star Alliance programs, while TAM flown EQM cannot be credited towards any global program, but their own.
