Ime, cases where flights have been overbooked to a level where denial of boarding occurs seems to be when there is an unexpected problem. e.g. another flight getting cancelled or an international flight where there are a lot of connecting passengers arriving late/wrong airport and having to be fitted into other services.
If it was a major issue, Im sure that the Consumer's association would have been sniffing around

And in the cases quoted by Dave, if you meet the check in requirements, you will not be dumped (but you MUST be checked in - not standing in the queue.)
