The W cabin is equipped with seats encased in a pod. You get an increased seat pitch and lateral space, with a collapsible footrest. With years of experience in W, the seat is torture, especially during night flights. It does not recline, but slides mechanically, offering marginal lumbar support, which becomes a real issue if you are more than 5'9". In a nutshell, it has been poorly designed, and is extremely uncomfortable. For years, the AF management has promised that a thicker, more resilient foam would replace the current one across the fleet; it has not happened yet. On a daytime long-haul, the seat is perfectly acceptable. The large tray table is good to get some work done during the flight. Laptops and phones can be plugged in. Decent-size, wide TV screen for in-flight entertainment. Barring a distinct appetizer and dessert, the food and drinks are identical to what is served in economy (Y). Some PAXs (and pursers) have argued that one is often better off flying in Y, where seats can be somewhat reclined. Tough call if the 78k miles are for the two legs, one of which corresponds to a daytime flight. 75k miles for just the PEK-CDG segment is ludicrous, and definitely not worth it.
Perfectly summarised.
Just to let you know: some months ago I had to refuse an opup from Y to W on a night flight and insist to be put back in Y.
OP: do not buy the upgrade.
