Lots of frequent flyer plans operate like this. I had J and F awards to Asia from PHX using AA miles. Flying on CX for the long segments. Could I get even a single first class AA award seat at low levels, from PHX-LAX for the first leg 10+ months in advance. Nyet.
I had to periodically check, first I got one seat, then a few months later the last two seats opened up. It’s just how things are, now.
That doesn’t make it right because “everyone else” is also committing false advertising. Also Alaska tries to differentiate itself as the “customer friendly airline“ that’s different from the big guys.
