The advice you’ve been given on the naming is absolutely correct - I’d say it happens more often than not.
As soon as you confirm your fare and pay for it, your hold ceases to exist. If you then cancel, you will have to pay whatever the new fare is to recreate the booking - so if there’s still any doubt, you should hang on as close to the end of the hold period as possible.
However it is perhaps worth noting that there are two, arguably three, cooling off periods with Hold bookings. So you can cancel Hold bookings within 24 hours and get the Hold fee back (I don't think you can amend it and continue the hold); when you confirm the booking the Hold fee gets refunded via a separate process, and you can amend the booking at confirmation. Then within the first 24 hours of that confirmation and potentially 4 days after the hold you can amend or cancel too.
