I would also personally these days have a slight trust issue about trying to coerce BA to do something like that when it was outside the standard workflows / procedures they are happy to accommodate. I'd be fretting about bag arrival until the other end, and the pain of it not making it through for me is much greater than the pain of lugging it either to left luggage or an airport hotel for a night.
