But I am absolutely gobsmacked to get an upgrade email from UA today. In four years of flying UA and receiving a good deal of CPUs, I am absolutely bewildered to receive an email confirming an upgrade with no change in preferences and settings.

More importantly, I wanted to ask if this was a unicorn moment where the UA IT aligned or an area where UA IT actually improved.

(Side note: I still deeply distrust UA's SHARES implementation, and even if I got emails 95%+ of the time telling me "tough luck pal" I'd prefer that to not knowing if I missed the normal upgrade procedure before T-24).
I always receive an e-mail from United about upgrades (if the upgrade did not happen at the time of booking) - for MUAs, GPUs, RPUs and CPUs.

I also get the e-mail telling me 24 hours before the flight if the GPU/RPU did not come through and reassuring me I am on the list.

In contrast I do not always get the e-mails with my reservation after it is ticketed.
