The law over in the UK is that damage has to be pointed out to you when you return the car and a report written out and signed by you, otherwise as soon as you have handed over the keys and left you are no longer liable.

They are at it!!
I know this is very old but I wonder if this is true/still valid? I returned a car to avis and was told I had a few pounds to pay as I returned it late. I did not get sent any receipt nor was I made aware of any damage claimed. However I have no checked on my cc and see they have put in a charge for the full £1000 access and went to retrieve my online invoice. They are indeed claiming for damage that was at no point pointed out to me.
