Weather delays and diversions happen; employers generally are aware of this and willingly reimburse for expenses incurred. Not a pleasant situation to be in, but it sounds like someone (AA?) arranged a bus to ORD for anyone who absolutely needed to be there that night, so I'm not entirely sure what else they could or should have done.
