Given the info you gave my first thought was that you should focus on AA. I think the only drawback to that is Asia. UA has better coverage there. So some combination of UA and US might work. But AA has better nonstop options to Europe out of JFK now than does UA. To the coasts is about a wash between AA and UA out of New York.
