I rented a car at a NYC location about a week ago. They got the car ready, then I hear the guy bringing the car (something to the effect of): "look at the miles." The representative comes back to me, apologizes, and says she can't rent that car to me because it's over 15k miles. that's one instance when the seemingly customer friendly policy is actually unfriendly. the employees get a better "score" if they give upgrades to executive elites.
something similar happened to me. i reserved a full size for a one way from la to vegas. there were only suv's and minivans on the aisle. i found a compact nissan versa with 20000 miles at alamo. they would not let me take it even though i wanted it for the gas mileage because it's a downgrade. apparently a downgrade for an executive elite hurts them. instead, they gave me a minivan with 3/4 of a tank and told me to return it empty. i returned it in vegas on fumes and didn't have to fill gas at all.
