If you stick with the 777 both ways then it's the same plane, so no risk on separate bookings (though luggage might be more of a problem).
Plus if you change after departure, the fare calculation reverts to historic prices rather than current ones, so that is potentially a nice saving (if you have the cheap buckets left).
