When I was a kid (during the 80s/ 90s) it wasn't just allowed, but actively encouraged as part of in-flight entertainment for kids!
We would always be allowed to visit the flight deck mid-flight and the pilot would invite us to press a button that generated some kind of print out, then to sit in their seat for a photo. A few flights I was also invited to sit in the jump seat for take off and landing.
