You can get it renewed in a day. You have to go to the passport office in LA with a copy of your itinerary and all the forms and pictures ready. We did this in SEA. Got there at 6:30am was first in line had all the docs ready and had our new passport by 10:00am. We were flying to Europe and had 4 months left on it but that was not enough.
