AA let me change the dates free of charge when my mum died between booking a flight and flying it (discount economy with no flexibility). They were easy and sympathetic to deal with on the phone and just wanted me to email in a copy of the death certificate. Nor were they fussy about what dates I changed (they weren't conflicting with funerals or anything - I just didn't need to come back so soon anymore).
