HOPEFULLY they get on the new flight. If you missed the original connecting flight, there is a good chance your bags did to.
I had something odd happen once.
I was flying DME-LHR-JFK-SFO. The first segment on BA, the last 2 on AA
My bag flew BA all of the way to SFO on BA. I wasn't happy when I went to pick up my bag at JFK and the AAgent could not tell me where it was (I suspect they were looking at the BA tag number and trying to match it in the AA system)
When I got to SFO, the AA person was clueless. When I asked if the BA might have routed to bag to SFO, he said "no way that would happen"
I finally convinced him to call BA and my bag was with them in SFO.
As an apology the BA guy gave me an first class amenity kit
