Whenever I try and standby for an earlier flight, if I mention that at check in they usually tag the bag for the earlier flight, and then I just know to get my bag at the office if my standby didn't clear.

In most cases unless the connecting flight is cancelled entirely the bag will go where it is tagged to go on, whether or not you are with it.
