I agree, and that may have been the case here but we don't know. The way the OP described the son's response makes me think there was a chance it was a scam. I see enough people turned away for their efforts to get something they don't deserve to be skeptical of anyone trying to get a favor like this.
I don't blame the GA's either. It must get exhausting at times to constantly have people asking for things like this. I can see where they'd just give in to avoid a long, loud argument, especially in a stressful situation such as a delayed flight or quick turnaround time. Just because they grant the favor doesn't mean it was legitimate.
Maybe there should be a question at check in: "Do you have any carry-on luggage that requires special handling, such as a musical instrument, wedding dress, etc..."
Just a Yes or No that would flag the GA to call that person to the desk and approve early boarding. Anyone who answered No gets denied.
