I even do this intentionally, if I have an early arrival in e.g. Asia and want to have the room. In this case I book the room the night before and put a note in the remarks and follow up with e-mail or Telefax (Yes, I still have one) asking for confirmation that they held the room till my expected arrival time.

Never experience any problems.
