Not in IC Dusseldorf, once I booked advance purchase rate with similar terms, and I wasn't sure if I could arrive on Day 1 at all; I contacted the hotel and explained the situation. That day they pre-checked me in the room and when I actually arrived on time, they picked up my key card and form from a set of prepared envelopes. I think it's safest you contact the hotel early and they will suggest the best way to handle.
