A few comments here:
National vehicles definitely tend to be lower mileage...
RNO is my home airport. RNO is a "get paperwork at counter, then get keys in garage (from the booth or podium) airport. If you use National and have EC, you don't have to go to the counter inside at all. You go straight to the booth in the garage. If you use Alamo, even if you use the kiosk, you still have to go to the counter to get the contract from them then they let you go to the garage where you get the car from a podium.
Another odd one in PDX. Alamo is "separate" from National and quite a dumpy little place. Using Alamo in PDX requires going to a shuttle then selecting a high mileage vehicle from a nice open lot (uncovered), while using National requires you go just go to the (covered) garage...
But at many other airports like LAS, PHX, the skip the counter option with Alamo is a great experience comparable to that of National EC (other than worse vehicles sometimes).
