May I ask is my understanding correct / what is your experience, please? If it matters the hotel is IC Dusseldorf.

Thank you in advance.
You have in theory, until standard checkout time to turn up. In practise that won't hold as hotels have already seen you as noshow when closing/consolidating-accts for the previous nights hotel occupancy sometime between midnight and 7am

iIf you do not show up for first night, you will be charged first night and remainder of nights cancelled. This would mean for hotels like IC, often having CHECKIN=1500 CHECKOUT=1100 that not checking in by 1100 in the morning loses you your booking. You do not have all morning to checkin just until your hotels published standard checkout time..

In fact even if you arrive 8/9/10am, it is highly likely the hotel has done their room-consolidation-housekeeping by 7am at latest which would already have you down as noshow and remainder of stay auto-cancelled, and hotel would need to reinstate your reservation, including first night to allow you immediate checkin rather than wait until 3pm standard checkin for 2nd nights room

In such instances, I'd hate to be stuck in traffic, get there too late and be cancelled, so I would both email hotel and phone hotel the night before to explain and ask room to be held for late arrival+late checkin
