With a little bit of flexibility in your dates, and starting your searches a year out, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to find saver awards in both directions. If you don’t learn the strategies on how to get this done over the next two years, paying ~$200 to an award booking service is probably money well spent if it saves you thousands of dollars worth of miles.
That said, 3 years is an eternity in loyalty programs. Award prices inevitably go up, but my big fear, if wanting to take such a trip 3 years out, would be the arrival of fare-based award redemption.
