Likewise. What I and others do is get the booking reference (PNR) for the carrier concerned and then try to make allocations. Even then, this may not work as I think it will depend on whether the other carriers charge for seat selection on some/all seats.
LH charges for most Y seats - and they are not cheap on long-haul. Nothing beats LX who even charge for seat select in J.
