The idea, I think, was that Iran Air would be able to fly Teheran/New York non-stop so they ordered one when it was still on the drawing board. It had a shorter body than the original, odd looking thing.

Correct! I believe Pan Am was considered the launch airline but it was South African Airways that flew the first revenue flight with a Johannesburg-Lisbon-Rome-Athens service on April 24, 1976. Pan Am's inaugural was two days later on the New York-Tokyo route.
