Avios search locked me out of my BAEC account and password reset shenanigans

As per the title I have been looking to upgrade with Avios a previously made booking - my first port of call was looking via th app which didn’t result in anything at all showing up due to getting stuck on the search screen several times. My next action was trying the Mobile site only to get an error message.
Finally I resorted to winding up my laptop, logging into my exec account and trying again there. During the search I was asked for my log in details again and duly put them in.
Hey presto ! Locked account due to too many ‘attempts’ the onscreen message said it would be locked for 24 hours. I then went back to the app and as expected it said I was locked out and should follow the instructions in the email.
I did not have an email so ended up phoning the silver line who sent me one, despite many attempts to reset my password on my phone I couldn’t as apparently my password contained something other than letters and numbers (it didn’t) and was impossible to reset on my phone which directed me to the mobile site.
Eventually reset on the desktop site on my laptop, but what a palaver.
I don’t understand how two consecutive successful logins which were requested translate into ‘attempts’ - oh wait - it’s BA’s IT
