This won't work for everyone, but if you live in London itself, one possibility would be to book XXX-LHR//LCY-AMS and then AMS-LCY on the back-to-back. The bag can only be checked to LHR. Collect the bag there and take it home. Later on, fly LCY-AMS-LCY without checked bags - indeed, you'd literally need only to carry your passport in your hands.
