I feel the sole advantage of D1 is the flatbed...though it is the most important thing on a Transcon red eye. Speaking of D1 service, I was on JFK-SFO last week. 4:35 pm departure.. the meal service was a big disappointment, compared with my experience in 2015/16/17.. no printed menu.. everything on one tray.. no bread.. just like a normal domestic first meal.... the service is okay/acceptable range..

I would think that for most people paying to sit up front that the extra drive time at a time of day with no traffic would be worth it.
If this were a daytime flight, when the drive could easily be over an hour and you don't need to sleep, then this might be a good premium class alternative to SFO and worth giving up D1 for.
