First, what arbitrary decision? Marriott has decided not to continue offering a LT level and to make Plat the new highest level. That's not arbitrary just because you don't like it. Marriott obviously examined its data in making the decision and even updated it, so it is hardly arbitrary, You know none of the data, so how can you claim the decision is arbitrary?
Second, of course the group still chasing qualification is bigger and likely spends more money. Of course it is the more desirable group as far as Marriott marketing is concerned. Those LTs still spending money likely also have current status like I did for years. The points is that those people will now join the top tier of LTP. The idea that Marriott is looking to lavish all sorts of perks on the smaller group that does not spend just does not make sense. Of course the perks will be aimed at current guests and the guests who are making what is now the top tier, LTP, instead of on the retirement set: LTPP with no other status. Why Marriott needs to maintain a LT status they have no desire to continue is beyond me. They have made their choice that LTP will be the top tier and are closing out the unneeded level.
Well, I guess we will never know now will we? Apparently the designation mattered enough that they are considering exempting the SPG LTP into the group if they met the criteria.
The fact that we are having this discussion is indicative that they should have forced everyone into the same tier. If they offer one thing of marginal value to a sub group while not allowing others to earn the same item then they have by definition made an arbitrary decision.
Personally I am fine with the idea that it doesn't really matter. OF course practice has already shown that it does - both in SPG world and Marriott. Arbitrary delineation between apparently fragile ego types that populated the original Marriott and those of us whom are looking to maximize our own value should not put one group or the other at a disadvantage no matter how slight one group might see it.
