Well, OP did mention 3 people. And honestly, traffic depends on time of day and day of week. LT not always awful.

The train takes an hour depending on where you are relative to Penn Station, and if you're taking a car there, you'll hit a lot of the same traffic you will heading out of the city (if I'm going to take the train, I'll also take the subway to Penn Sta). Plus, NJ Transit train schedule sucks on weekends and tunnel traffic isn't usually too bad exiting, so it's probably not going to take you any longer to get to EWR then and it's definitely more convenient. But mid-week afternoons, and especially Friday afternoons, I would definitely lean heavily toward the train.
