From my experience, if you cancel an STANDARD award room (not Passport Plus 60% extra points), it will immediately go back into the award inventory. When I was booking an FFN for Hyatt Maui earlier this year, I held an award night for March 15 that I wanted to change to the 16th. I looked on the Hyatt website and there was no award availability for March 15th (which I already had) but there was availability for March 16th. I cancelled my award night on the 15th and then booked the 16th. 10 minutes later I looked at availability and all of a sudden the night I gave up on the 15th was now available to book as an award via the website. One other important note is that it seems that the award nights are completely separate from reg. reservations because the rest of the Maui hotel was COMPLETELY sold out for paying customers on the night of March 15th even though one could get my old award night there. So you may want to call GP Customer Service and ask if this is in fact the case. If so, cancel your night and then rebook it with whoevers FFN award immediately after. From my experience, FFN awards and standard point award nights DO IN FACT COME FROM THE SAME BUCKET!!! FFN awards and Passport Plus point awards DO NOT COME FROM THE SAME BUCKET! Again, double check with Customer Service but this is my understanding and goes along with my experiences with award nights.
