I cancelled a quite restrictive LH SYD-FRA-SYD ticket (with stipulated cancellation fees) on the scheduled morning of departure because the Icelandic volcano caused cancellation of Euro flights - including the inbound FRA-BKK that I was to connect to. LH fully refunded the fare paid. But I had no other losses so can’t comment on compo issues.
