In addition to what pvn said about the change fees, it totally depends on the market and the fares offered. There are some markets where two one-ways are cheaper than a round trip, others where they are the same, and others where the round-trip is cheaper than the combined one-ways. The latter is especially true for international travel.

Best suggestion is to use matrix.itasoftware.com to build the specific itinerary you want then search each leg independently to see how they price. You can use a tool like www.bookwithmatrix.com to book things from ITA that Delta.com may struggle to combine.
