To each, their own....but, I suggest you time yourself doing both, you will find negligable difference....
I'd challenge this 9 times out of 10. It assumes everyone is as efficient as you seem to be, when that's just not the case IMO. The run-off areas, especially in fast track, are typically small and it slows down the queue, particularly for lighter-packed travellers.

Personally I think LGW has it spot on - adjacent re-packing tables AND somewhere to aid shoe tying.
