With those positioning flights, people need to take into account the risk of misconnecting and the potential inconvenience for other members of the travelling party (esp children) and of course the cost of getting to/from the starting point which will add to the cost.
actually the challenge for me is that my wife has reduced mobility and is on crutches all the time. We can only do LH in J. It's quite the ask to add additional flights to get to Oz but in order to keep costs under 10k we were okay with going ex EU.
We are plenty of avios and at least 1 Amex 2-4-1 so cost to position isn't a massive factor.
