Quite a lot of the complimentary publications provided in lounges and at some boarding gates are given out free by the publishers because they can add them on to their circulation numbers. I don't know if BA had such a deal with the Mail but I would imagine that even if BA were paying for them, they weren't paying the cover price.
I haven't bought a national paper since the Independent went out of print but I wish that BA would put copies of the Press & Journal (Highlands & Islands edition, thank you very much...) in the lounges!

I work for one of the publications that appear in many airports and certain airlines.
Free copies are not added in to ABC circ figures (some are shown separately).
Paid for copies generally are.
Bulk copies such as airports aren’t the same price as in the newsagents however they are still higher than cost price.
Daily Mail have a huge ABC circ figure, as expected.
