If the same rate is still available, I would prefer to cancel and rebook. It is a “cleaner” transaction.
Otherwise, it looks like one is playing games, i.e. attempting to “hold” suite availability, and then still get a free upgrade without using the instrument.
If one is going to cancel a confirmed suite upgrade, I would advise doing it well in advance. And, do not “expect” a suite, although you may end up with one.
It’s a bit like attempting to hold a seat in F/J with a refundable ticket, and then trying to swap that out for an upgrade or award. It is not guaranteed to work, and is also questionable practice.
