It's considered desirable and well utilized, although I don't know the current rules about use for leisure trips or by students rather than faculty and staff. The service was originally set up for library users, but I know that some trustees have also used it.

This is different from the commercial paid service that I mentioned in my earlier post. I don't know whether Geryhound/Trailways still does Ithaca bus station to/from NYC bus station service, but there's a newer outfit that specializes in just the Ithaca-NYC nonstop route. It's oriented toward the university community and might be some sort of student enterprise (at least initially). Unfortunately I don't remember the name but it should be easy to find as it's well known on campus and seems to advertise there.
Cornell's Campus to Campus bus service takes four hours each way; it is available to anyone, but it is pricey. There are two relatively new express services from Downtown Ithaca to Manhattan: Big Red Bullet, which goes nonstop; and OurBus, which makes a quick stop in Binghamton, if necessary, to pick up or discharge Manhattan passengers.

Greyhound, Trailways, and Coach USA/Short Line continue to provide service out of the Ithaca Bus Terminal on West State Street. (The Short Line buses also pick up and discharge on the Cornell Campus.)
