I'm not eligible to apply for GE or TSA-PRE but I got PreCheck 95% of the time due to my Delta and AA status when flying them. Since last year when the changes to the program were announced, I've never got it again. Same for my spouse. So yes, it seems that the free TSA PreCheck days are over.
I am still seeing lots of adults getting PreCheck on boarding passes despite never having had a KTN given to the travelers. Some of these free PreCheck people aren’t even US persons, and not all of them are even close to (nor in) traditional retirement age.
