My naive mind is wondering how a crooked employee would benefit, how'd they get the cash out of the hotel account to which it had been paid to somewhere they can use it? This is very odd I agree and the timing smells off, some sleuthing required.
A bit of a stretch, but maybe the crooked employee tells his friends that he can get them cheap stays at a high end hotel, so they pay him some cash secretly, and he checks them in fraudulently with someone else's card and charges the stay to that card.
