I believe a no show will be treated like a revenue ticket. If you don't cancel it PRIOR to the flight departure, the miles are gone.
Having no showed on an AAnytime award Central->North America I can tell you this is wrong. Plus while I did not get a tax refund, I didn't pay the restore miles to account fee either which was double, so a win two ways.
