Considering the Marriott/United match came with lounge access, it would not be difficult for Marriott to change the wording in the upgraded program for United partnership guests to retain the benefits they had for years.
It is not like asking for something that was not already there.
It is taking away a benefit.
And unfortunately that happens quite often with loyalty programs, so you shouldn't be surprised if that does in fact end up being the case here as well.
