It takes Platinum Premier to get United Silver but only United Gold to get Marriott Gold. If they bumped it up to platinum, it would be a tier up but Marriott people still only get Silver.
Considering the Marriott/United match came with lounge access, it would not be difficult for Marriott to change the wording in the upgraded program for United partnership guests to retain the benefits they had for years.
It is not like asking for something that was not already there.
It is taking away a benefit.
