The Montreal Convention certainly does not speak to customer service gestures.

The Montreal Convention speaks to direct and unavoidable expenses incurred by the passenger as the result of the delay (or loss). E.g., necessities which were not in cabin luggage. Some carriers are much tougher on this than others.

What were those expenses in this instance?
