I'd say you now have the chance to go out and spend a reasonable sum of money on new clothes. So long as you can fit them in your cases on the next leg, that's not a bad gesture of goodwill .

This is a situation that's very clearly set down in the Montreal Convention. Where things are defined by law, goodwill doesn't tend to come into it - you get what you're due. If airlines have to have legislation imposed upon them because they act unreasonably otherwise, you know you're not ever going to get more than the defined maximum.
