Most non regular travellers I know will aim to get to the airport 3 hours before a flight to the US, whereas I know I can cut it finer than that, but have an aversion to risk so still get to the airport in loads of time, and make good use of GF Lounge. It's just more enjoyable that way. It also means that if a motorway isn't behaving, like in an instance when I was flying to NRT last year, I can find myself just making the T-60 deadline. I'd never choose to make the journey more stressful.
In the wider world outside of FT I don't know anyone who would allow less than 2 hours for a flight anywhere.
