All good points. Yes, Alaska is going to feel fare pressure on this one since they have a ton of overlap. Alaska is already bulking up to fight, as you’ll hear in tomorrow’s post. But I don’t see Southwest pushing Alaska out. They may just need to get used to a lower fare environment.
Hard to imagine what exactly it'll be; adding even more capacity won't be great for anyone.
My prediction: AS, thanks to its new relationship with Airbus, will buy a small fleet of heavily discounted A380s and equip the upper deck with refurb'ed VX first class seats. Lower deck tourist class. Substitute 747-8 if you are a Boeing fanboy.
