That concept could work with a few tweaks. Assuming the seat at the bottom of the image is your window seat, its "pod" would need to be shifted forward. This would effectively put each seat next to each other, and then aisle access for the window would be right behind the aisle seat.
This would allow for keeping the footrest open, but it could also be fixed. This could allow for storage below the footrest. If they really wanted to, they could add a shelf/whatever a bit above the footrest. Not so low it would restrict even the longest of feet, but not so high as to make it unusable.
So with all that you end up with a staggered seating, keep all the benefits of the current seat, and add in the storage options and new features currently missing.
