Last night the LGA team did exactly that for me. Karolina (spelling?) Called me and proactively booked me on an earlier flight as my booked flight was going to be delayed. I rushed to the airport, got new boarding passes at the gate, and onto the earlier flight.

Had I ended up taking my original flight, then I would have missed my connecting flight YYZ--YYC and I would have had to spend the night in YYZ.
