This is basically what I did, except in person instead of on the phone, and it worked out great for me (it basically put me on the flights I would have booked had they not been $500 more expensive). However, it was very poorly handled at the gate, and many others were not connecting to a place with tons of flights from all over North America. Who knows how some of their stories are going to end, but I bet there will be a ton of lost bags and late arrivals.
