All of that said, I tend to be proactive. I've got reroutes in mind and then am in line and on the phone, arranging a reroute based on specific requests. GA tend to look at getting you to DFW, but that is a connection point for you, so all you are looking at is YYC-LHR on any carriers with which AA has an interline ticketing agreement. When you can feed an agent a series of flight numbers that he can type in, you are much more likely to get what you want.
This is basically what I did, except in person instead of on the phone, and it worked out great for me (it basically put me on the flights I would have booked had they not been $500 more expensive). However, it was very poorly handled at the gate, and many others were not connecting to a place with tons of flights from all over North America. Who knows how some of their stories are going to end, but I bet there will be a ton of lost bags and late arrivals.
